Habibi Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

When I told Umi about Nusaybah’s dad’s phonecall, the first thing she asked was, “And what about Naseerah?”. “How’d you know about her?”, I asked, puzzled. “Your Maami told me that she thought you two were hitting it off and that Naseerah had been telling Maimoonah how she hadn’t met a guy like you before.”, Umi replied. “You really shouldn’t be playing with girls hearts. I thought you better.”, Umi added. “I’m not… ok, you know what? I’ll explain everything when I see you’ll.”, I told her, then I gave her a list of items I needed from my room to bring along to Durban. Abbu and Umi were to leave on Thursday morning and reach Durban that night. It worked out pretty much the same if they came by car or bus, so Abbu opted for the bus. It’s way more relaxed than sitting behind the wheel with your foot stuck to the peddle in one position for hours at a time.

I didn’t want my boss to think I’m taking advantage of his kindness, so I’d been working double shifts every day to make up for the 5 days leave I was taking. My work was up to date and I even did a little extra to make it easy for whoever was going to replace me for the few days.

When I was officially on leave, I didn’t waste any time. The first thing I did was go out to get gifts for all my future in-laws. Getting Nusaybah’s dad something was easy. I had to choose between a tool kit or this cool gadget- I took the gadget. But getting her Mum something was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do! She’d be the only one to convince Nusaybah’s Dad to give me a shot, but with that being said, I’d have to win her over first.

Habibati Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

“Your Dada didn’t die Nusaybah, your father and Kaka only lied because they were very very angry with him for what he did……..”

I was still in shock Sadeekun. Dadi’s words kept repeating itself in my mind. I couldn’t believe we had been lied to all our lives. I was freaking out! My mind ran in circles. I saw how much it hurt Dadi to tell me why he’d left. Her eyes had welled up with tears, and even after a decade, she looked heartbroken and a tiny bit confused.

Apparently, Dada had a penchant for charming the ladies. He was after all a very handsome man, even I could see that from the photo I’d seen of him, apart from the black and white picture and the weird looking clothes he had on. He looked like one of those actors from the oldies black and white movies where the sound was awful and lots of over dramatising.

Habibati Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

Today was very challenging, but I told myself to be strong and not let anything get me down. After cleaning from one end to the other TWICE coza how messy these kids are, I was exhausted! Believe me, there’s nothing that can make you more emotional than seeing fresh mud footprints on the sparkling clean floor just after you’ve mopped with a spaghetti mop, but still I was determined to not show any signs of weakness.

When I was done, I went to the kitchen to start preping to cook, I started by grating a whole bunch of tomatoes. Apparantly, when they were in season, they were much cheaper, and so it was sensible to buy like a whole years supply and store them away in the freezer for future use. Eyh Sadeekun, don’t ask me why just paying a few more bucks for fresh ones isn’t worth it. My hands were frozen numb the minute I started grating the first one! By the time I was halfway my hands had pins and needles and itched like crazy even though I left the tomatoes out to  defrost.
