Habibi Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

I’m speechless, so totally speechless, she’s so beautiful, even more than the first time i laid eyes on her. I feel like I can’t breath when I look at her, and everything becomes a blur. It made every pothole on the journey here worth it!

I hadn’t slept much at all last night. I kept tossing and turning, trying to picture how this whole official proposal thing would play out. If it was going to go anything like it did with Naseerah, Umi would totally blow it.

Eventually I fell asleep around 2am but had to be up at 3:30. Surprisingly I woke up energised, refreshed and ready to go.

I tell you Sadeekun, meeting the future father-in-law makes you so nervous that you scrub places you never knew you had You know, just in case he checks! After a good scrub down, I changed into my gym clothes, read Salaah, then packed the car.

When I told Umi about Nusaybah’s dad’s phonecall, the first thing she asked was, “And what about Naseerah?”. “How’d you know about her?”, I asked, puzzled. “Your Maami told me that she thought you two were hitting it off and that Naseerah had been telling Maimoonah how she hadn’t met a guy like you before.”, Umi replied. “You really shouldn’t be playing with girls hearts. I thought you better.”, Umi added. “I’m not… ok, you know what? I’ll explain everything when I see you’ll.”, I told her, then I gave her a list of items I needed from my room to bring along to Durban. Abbu and Umi were to leave on Thursday morning and reach Durban that night. It worked out pretty much the same if they came by car or bus, so Abbu opted for the bus. It’s way more relaxed than sitting behind the wheel with your foot stuck to the peddle in one position for hours at a time.

I didn’t want my boss to think I’m taking advantage of his kindness, so I’d been working double shifts every day to make up for the 5 days leave I was taking. My work was up to date and I even did a little extra to make it easy for whoever was going to replace me for the few days.

When I was officially on leave, I didn’t waste any time. The first thing I did was go out to get gifts for all my future in-laws. Getting Nusaybah’s dad something was easy. I had to choose between a tool kit or this cool gadget- I took the gadget. But getting her Mum something was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do! She’d be the only one to convince Nusaybah’s Dad to give me a shot, but with that being said, I’d have to win her over first.

Habibi Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

Having Zaid around is like having my mother here (she’d slap me if I told her that- No one is good enough to take her place, not even my wife!). I woke up this morning in time to wash up and read salaah, Zaid was already done. Infact, when I finished reading he had breakfast ready and waiting. He called the other guys to join too since that was the Muslim thing to do, but they refused, saying it’s too early and asked if we were mad. As far as I know, it’s true that every pakistaani man knows how to cook and cut hair (atleast every one I’ve met). Seeing what a good roomate Zaid is, it made me feel lousy. What if I was the Shaun of his life? I enjoy his company but I want him to enjoy mine just as much! So I planned for supper to be on me.

Work has been a little hectic lately. But I need to start pushing some overtime if I ever want to bring my bride home, to our OWN home. Today I got 5 missed calls from Zuhayr. It was so frustrating because I really wanted to know what he had to say, but we aren’t allowed to answer personal calls during work hours and if it’s an emergency then our siblings must phone on the work phone. It might sound unfair, but I guess if I were the boss I’d have the same rule because I’ve seen how people go on and on, on their phones during work hours and no actual work gets done in the time they are getting paid for. As soon as I had a chance during my lunch break, I called Zuhayr back. After we greeted eachother he said, “I know we are to avoid suspicion in Islam, so please come over after work. I found out something important, something you’d want to know.” As annoying as it was that Zuhayr wouldn’t spit it out right there and then, I understood that ,that wasn’t his character. He never talks about someone in their absence, especially not when it surrounds suspicion or if the truth was not confirmed. Come to think of it, even when it IS confirmed, he wouldn’t say a word unless he says it straight to you. It might sound snobby but hey, I’d rather you say it to my face rather than stab me in the back.

“Don’t apologise. It was me who gave Stanley orders that night…”, Zuhayr said. To me it looked as if he had a slight smirk on his face. It could also be my imagination running away with me. Then again, after what he’s done, I wouldn’t put anything pass him. How could he do such a thing?! I always thought of him as a pious, good-hearted person.
“What the?!! Why would you do that Zuhayr? What have I ever done to you?!”, I yelled. All he did was nod his head and say, “Follow me”. Who the hell did he think he was? Telling me what to do after he’s commited such a grave sin towards me. I got in my car and followed him anyway. Afterall I was there to get answers, whatever way it may be. We drove further into town and stopped at a random bus-stop. I was itching so bad to get answers, I didn’t even realise that this could be another one of his setups. Maybe he braught me here to get one of his goons to slice me, steal my organs to DONATE to the hospital, and throw my left overs in the bush nearby. He’s already done one thing I never imagined he would do, what’s to stop him from doing something worse. He’d probably think it’s ok coz he’d be saving 5 other people’s lives. I made up my mind to stay put and keep my engine running with my foot ready to hit the gas. A few minutes later we saw Stanley get off a bus. Zuhayr got out of his car but I didn’t move an inch. He signaled for me to drop my window. I guess he noticed that I wasn’t too comfortable. “Heeey boss man! What are you doing here?”, Stanley smiled and gave Zuhayr a hug. I wouldn’t even dream of hugging my boss, Zuhayr was so down to earth that everybody felt like being themselves around him. I shook my head to throw out all my good thoughts of peace-loving-Zuhayr.

“Stanley worked for…”, My eyes widened as the name left Asghar’s lips. “…Zuhayr”, It’s like my heart stopped beating for a second. “But why? I thought we? How could? I don’t understand!”, I sat on the curb and burried my head in my hands. Asghar sat next to me, “I guess it’s time to find out.”, he said. “At this hour? No, leave it. The baby must be asleep now.”, I said, fighting everything inside me from going over there  right this minute. “That’s the other thing I wanted to talk to you about. Aneesa and the baby.”, Asghar looked at me seriously. “Well, what about them?”, I was clueless on how they fit into all of this. “If this came out, they could get hurt. Aneesa will have marital problems and the baby could lose his father, or worse, his mother! It’s been the only thing holding me back ever since i’ve found out.”, as Asghar said those words, something came to mind. This baby could lose not only his parents, but his dignity when Zuhayr leaves Aneesa and then blabs to the world that he isn’t the child’s real father. Poor Aneesa will be crushed even more. I didn’t know what to do Sadeekun, I just sat there, deep in thought. As much as I wanted answers, I didn’t want to destroy everything Aneesa and Zuhayr have built over the past 2 years.

Shaun had gone 2 days with wearing the same underware. Apparently he was, “Too busy” and didn’t get a chance to stop at the shop. If you ask me, I’d say he’s just plain damn lazy! I even braught back the scissors and knives, but he didn’t even bother to even look at it, let alone pick it up and use it. Instead, he ended up paying the cleaning lady a tip + pizza to unpack his things and put them in it’s place. I’m really thinking about moving out from here soon! Shaun really gets on my nerves!!

After work today I decided to go to the mall to buy a little something for Nusaybah. Her birthday will be coming up soon and I’d like to surprise her. There’s nothing women like more than a man who remembers to treat her for her birthday (and first time we met anniversary, first kiss anniversary, first time we held hands anniversary and finally, wedding anniversary. That’s excluding Valentines day, Mother’s day, Eid day, Women’s day… And basically every other day in the year!). I looked around but couldn’t find anything she’d need. After hours, I finally saw something I liked! It was a beautiful sparkling bracelet and anklet set with charms. A little pricey, one month’s salary gone, but hey, I don’t know when I’d ever get to spend this kinda money on her again coz from next month  I’ll be paying bills and buying furniture. So I bought it… Making sure 2 of the charms were an ‘S’ and an ‘N’. I’m sure she’s going to love it! Chicks dig these things – I think.

I woke up this morning to the sound of my alarm ringing. With my eyes still shut I felt for my phone that was on the bed somewhere and hit the ‘dismiss’ button. After placing my feet down, I yawned and rubbed my head on the way to the bathroom. My eyes were barely open, you could say they were still dreamy…
And then it happened…
*BAM* *CRIch* *PaaRr* *POOM*
You may now kiss the floor!

“SHAUN!!!” I yelled as I got up and pulled his blanket off him. “How many times must I tell you to put this away?!” I threw his bag at him. He got up in a shock and put his hands in the air, “I didn’t do it! I swear!” he yelled in horror. “I know you didn’t do it you idiot. THAT’S THE PROBLEM!”, I pointed to all his things stilll laying on the floor. When he realised it was just me and that it was a bag that I threw at him, he swore, pulled back his blanket and went straight back to sleep. I was furious!!! This guy needed to be taught a lesson! But how? When my butt touched the toilet pan, the ideas came flooding in like pixie dust. After I got dressed Shaun finally woke up. “Dude I’m giving you until I get back home to pick all your stuff up and put it in it’s place. Anything that happens to anything out of place will be your own fault” I warned. “Yeah man wharreva” he brushed it off. He’s in for it now…

I left Irfaan’s house late the other night. Irfaan has this thing, he mixes his metaphors. Instead of saying we talked until the cows came home, or we talked until we were blue in the face… Yep! He said, “We talked until the cows went blue”. Shame, I guess he’s not the smartest kid in the toolbox…

On my way home that night, I wondered if what Irfaan said could’ve been true. Why was Nusaybah upset that I met Sameer? Was it coz she was hiding something from me or was she just embarassed of me? I waited till the early hours of the next morning for her call, but nothing. Eventually I stopped looking at my phone and went to sleep. I decided to rather focus on enjoying having my room all to myself coz I’d soon be sharing, something I’m not very fond of.

Although not hearing from Nusaybah was depressing, I had to get back to work. I guess it was better being at work and having my mind kept occupied. “Ekse! boss man wants you in his office…”, Usmaan yelled from upstairs. With me being in a dwaal all the time, I could”ve easily made a small mistake that could’ve costed the company thousands! I won’t lie, I was skrik!! I walked into the big boss’s office like a school boy walking into the principle’s office. “Have a seat”, he said. The lines on his forehead were part of his natural normal look, but it made him look as if he was angry-like. “No no, I’m fine standing. Please don’t fire me!”, I blurted out like an idiot! He chuckled, “I’m not firing you my brother”, he was old enough to be my big uncle yet he was calling me his brother. “Alhumdulilah, with the Qudrat of The Almighty Allah, our factory is doing very well and it is now feasible to move to a bigger one in Durban”, he leaned back, “And so I need to put together a team to send there to start it up”, he said, raising an eyebrow. “Soooo… You… Want… Me… Tooo? Find out who wants to go?”, I asked, confused. He chuckled again, “No man! I’m transferring you. You will do what you do here, but in Durban. We’ll pay for the team’s accomodation for 2 months, after which you’ll will have to find other accomodation. Up for it?”, he asked. “Definitely! I mean ofcourse…”,  I said, still in shock that I was picked to be transferred even though I had just only started out at the company a short while ago.
