When Dad announced the sleeping arrangements, all I wanted to do was scream! How on earth could Dad allow this to happen?!

I could see on Sayfullah’s Mum’s face that she wasn’t too impressed with Dad. She looked just as stunned as I was. After all, even I assumed they’d sleep here.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

I shivered at the dreadful thought of knowing that my future in-laws would find out that they were living under the same roof as the people who would’ve been my in-laws 2 years ago. It’s the one thing I don’t need right now! It’ll ruin everything!

Habibi Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

I’m speechless, so totally speechless, she’s so beautiful, even more than the first time i laid eyes on her. I feel like I can’t breath when I look at her, and everything becomes a blur. It made every pothole on the journey here worth it!

I hadn’t slept much at all last night. I kept tossing and turning, trying to picture how this whole official proposal thing would play out. If it was going to go anything like it did with Naseerah, Umi would totally blow it.

Eventually I fell asleep around 2am but had to be up at 3:30. Surprisingly I woke up energised, refreshed and ready to go.

I tell you Sadeekun, meeting the future father-in-law makes you so nervous that you scrub places you never knew you had You know, just in case he checks! After a good scrub down, I changed into my gym clothes, read Salaah, then packed the car.

You’ll NEVER believe what happened! Dad gave me back my phone and told me that he’s giving it to me so that he can keep track of how far along the journey Sayfullah and his parents were. He knew it’d be silly if he phoned them every hour, asking where they are.

Under any circumstance, other than this one, I would’ve taken this opportunity to go through all my unread messages and catch up with life. But today, all I could think about was the house looking perfect and the food tasting amazing!

Since my list ticked off all the major cleaning chores, I needed to do basic daily cleaning today. In normal households that would be translated to “Spring Cleaning”. I planned out by time for the day so that everything would be spot on when they arrived. This was going to be my very first and only official Samoosa run!

When I told Umi about Nusaybah’s dad’s phonecall, the first thing she asked was, “And what about Naseerah?”. “How’d you know about her?”, I asked, puzzled. “Your Maami told me that she thought you two were hitting it off and that Naseerah had been telling Maimoonah how she hadn’t met a guy like you before.”, Umi replied. “You really shouldn’t be playing with girls hearts. I thought you better.”, Umi added. “I’m not… ok, you know what? I’ll explain everything when I see you’ll.”, I told her, then I gave her a list of items I needed from my room to bring along to Durban. Abbu and Umi were to leave on Thursday morning and reach Durban that night. It worked out pretty much the same if they came by car or bus, so Abbu opted for the bus. It’s way more relaxed than sitting behind the wheel with your foot stuck to the peddle in one position for hours at a time.

I didn’t want my boss to think I’m taking advantage of his kindness, so I’d been working double shifts every day to make up for the 5 days leave I was taking. My work was up to date and I even did a little extra to make it easy for whoever was going to replace me for the few days.

When I was officially on leave, I didn’t waste any time. The first thing I did was go out to get gifts for all my future in-laws. Getting Nusaybah’s dad something was easy. I had to choose between a tool kit or this cool gadget- I took the gadget. But getting her Mum something was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do! She’d be the only one to convince Nusaybah’s Dad to give me a shot, but with that being said, I’d have to win her over first.

I’m no doctor, but sometimes I suspect I have a slight case of OCD or OCPD (Obsessive–compulsive personality disorder) to be specific. As Wikipedia says it, although OCD and OCPD both may share outside similarities – rigid and ritual-like behaviors, for example: Hoarding, orderliness, and a need for symmetry and organization, attitudes toward these behaviors differ between people affected with either of the disorders. For people with OCD, these behaviors are unwanted and seen as unhealthy, being the product of anxiety, while for people with OCPD they are experienced as rational and desirable, being the result of, for example, a strong adherence to routines, a natural inclination towards cautiousness,
or a desire to achieve perfection – THAT’S ME!

I can’t stand the sound of metal clinking, so I wash the cutlery in single file. I hate when forks mix with spoons or knives with forks, so Aunty Jane makes very sure she packs them in the draw correctly or I’d leave my  food to reset the draw. I even can’t concentrate on the TV or listen to the radio if I know the volume isn’t set on any number that ends with either 5 or 0. I’d think about the volume the whole time and not know anything that just happened, until someone changes it from 39 to 40.

When my father told Sayfullah to bring his parents and come home, my heart jumped out of my body! I couldn’t believe it! It wasn’t even a minute later when 101 things ran through my mind on how to make the house perfect for when they arrive. So over the next 6 days, Dad would have to pay Aunty Jane overtime coz I needed the house to be in tip top shape for when they arrive. Scratch that… he’d have to pay me overtime! I wouldn’t be satisfied until I’ve done it myself.

“Keep this up and we’ll be marrying the house to someone else in no time.”, Mum said sarcastically, seeing me SCRUBBING the walls outside.

Having Zaid around is like having my mother here (she’d slap me if I told her that- No one is good enough to take her place, not even my wife!). I woke up this morning in time to wash up and read salaah, Zaid was already done. Infact, when I finished reading he had breakfast ready and waiting. He called the other guys to join too since that was the Muslim thing to do, but they refused, saying it’s too early and asked if we were mad. As far as I know, it’s true that every pakistaani man knows how to cook and cut hair (atleast every one I’ve met). Seeing what a good roomate Zaid is, it made me feel lousy. What if I was the Shaun of his life? I enjoy his company but I want him to enjoy mine just as much! So I planned for supper to be on me.

Work has been a little hectic lately. But I need to start pushing some overtime if I ever want to bring my bride home, to our OWN home. Today I got 5 missed calls from Zuhayr. It was so frustrating because I really wanted to know what he had to say, but we aren’t allowed to answer personal calls during work hours and if it’s an emergency then our siblings must phone on the work phone. It might sound unfair, but I guess if I were the boss I’d have the same rule because I’ve seen how people go on and on, on their phones during work hours and no actual work gets done in the time they are getting paid for. As soon as I had a chance during my lunch break, I called Zuhayr back. After we greeted eachother he said, “I know we are to avoid suspicion in Islam, so please come over after work. I found out something important, something you’d want to know.” As annoying as it was that Zuhayr wouldn’t spit it out right there and then, I understood that ,that wasn’t his character. He never talks about someone in their absence, especially not when it surrounds suspicion or if the truth was not confirmed. Come to think of it, even when it IS confirmed, he wouldn’t say a word unless he says it straight to you. It might sound snobby but hey, I’d rather you say it to my face rather than stab me in the back.

After Dadi and Dada reunited, it felt as if a dark cloud had been lifted off our family. I got to see Dad’s childlike side, something I thought I’d never see. Turned out that Dad thought all those letters were from someone pretending to be Dada in order to blackmail him, that’s why he got rid of them and told Kaka to do the same if ever he were to recieve any letter from that address.

Dadi used to give Mum such a hard time, Mum used to say that if Dada were still around Dadi would have her mind occupied and wouldn’t comment on EVERYTHING mum did. So you can imagine how excited Mum was to meet Dada. Seeing how happy my family was, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Dada’s other wife and kids. They must’ve spent all their life watching Dada yearn for this. What if that made them feel like it was their fault? Or that they wern’t good enough? They were a part of our family too and I wanted them to know that. So I requested that on my birthday, we get the whole family together at our house, including my half uncles and their wives.

“Don’t apologise. It was me who gave Stanley orders that night…”, Zuhayr said. To me it looked as if he had a slight smirk on his face. It could also be my imagination running away with me. Then again, after what he’s done, I wouldn’t put anything pass him. How could he do such a thing?! I always thought of him as a pious, good-hearted person.
“What the?!! Why would you do that Zuhayr? What have I ever done to you?!”, I yelled. All he did was nod his head and say, “Follow me”. Who the hell did he think he was? Telling me what to do after he’s commited such a grave sin towards me. I got in my car and followed him anyway. Afterall I was there to get answers, whatever way it may be. We drove further into town and stopped at a random bus-stop. I was itching so bad to get answers, I didn’t even realise that this could be another one of his setups. Maybe he braught me here to get one of his goons to slice me, steal my organs to DONATE to the hospital, and throw my left overs in the bush nearby. He’s already done one thing I never imagined he would do, what’s to stop him from doing something worse. He’d probably think it’s ok coz he’d be saving 5 other people’s lives. I made up my mind to stay put and keep my engine running with my foot ready to hit the gas. A few minutes later we saw Stanley get off a bus. Zuhayr got out of his car but I didn’t move an inch. He signaled for me to drop my window. I guess he noticed that I wasn’t too comfortable. “Heeey boss man! What are you doing here?”, Stanley smiled and gave Zuhayr a hug. I wouldn’t even dream of hugging my boss, Zuhayr was so down to earth that everybody felt like being themselves around him. I shook my head to throw out all my good thoughts of peace-loving-Zuhayr.

What was Gorifoi doing corresponding with dada?? And why was it so secret that she had to hide them this way?! I was stumped!!

The mystery got clearer when I read through the letters, and I could NOT believe my eyes at what I was reading. From the way Dada responded, it was as though Gorifoi had been replying to his mail. And what was even more confusing is that he sounded like a decent man! Not the monster daddy and them made him out to be. Gorifoi had given him another chance. I only read one letter before I remembered how I’d reacted to Razia evesdropping and hurriedly put the letters away.

I started packing my clothes in the suitcase, I wasn’t really a neat freak, but when it came to my luggage I was a teeny bit obsessive. “Salaam Nusaybah.”, Gorifoi said from behind me. I froze. “Wa alaykumsalaam.”, I answered. Willing myself not to attack her with my curiosity. “You ok?” She wanted to know when I turned around. “Yeah.” I frowned. “Why?” “You look a little weird, like you’re holding back.” She smiled. “Not having second thoughts about leaving are you?” I faked a smile back. “Not at all.” “Okay.” She sat on the edge of the bed. “Out with it! C’mon, what’s bugging you?” I stared at her. “Oh c’mon, I know your expressions pretty well by now.” She shrugged. I sighed. “Fine, so here’s the thing.” I started. “I found your letters to dada” Her face blanched of all colour. I could literally see how scared she was. “I only met him that once I promise!” She blurted out. I gasped. “You did what?” She groaned, “oh no.” “You met himmm??? When??” I screeched. “Shhhhhhhh.” She hushed me. “That night when I was trying out the new abaya. We had been mailing eachother for almost a year now and I decided I wanted to finally meet him again after all these years.”, her eyes lit up like a little kid who thinks they just met a superhero.

“Stanley worked for…”, My eyes widened as the name left Asghar’s lips. “…Zuhayr”, It’s like my heart stopped beating for a second. “But why? I thought we? How could? I don’t understand!”, I sat on the curb and burried my head in my hands. Asghar sat next to me, “I guess it’s time to find out.”, he said. “At this hour? No, leave it. The baby must be asleep now.”, I said, fighting everything inside me from going over there  right this minute. “That’s the other thing I wanted to talk to you about. Aneesa and the baby.”, Asghar looked at me seriously. “Well, what about them?”, I was clueless on how they fit into all of this. “If this came out, they could get hurt. Aneesa will have marital problems and the baby could lose his father, or worse, his mother! It’s been the only thing holding me back ever since i’ve found out.”, as Asghar said those words, something came to mind. This baby could lose not only his parents, but his dignity when Zuhayr leaves Aneesa and then blabs to the world that he isn’t the child’s real father. Poor Aneesa will be crushed even more. I didn’t know what to do Sadeekun, I just sat there, deep in thought. As much as I wanted answers, I didn’t want to destroy everything Aneesa and Zuhayr have built over the past 2 years.
