Habibi Sadeekun… (Beloved Friend)

Shaun had gone 2 days with wearing the same underware. Apparently he was, “Too busy” and didn’t get a chance to stop at the shop. If you ask me, I’d say he’s just plain damn lazy! I even braught back the scissors and knives, but he didn’t even bother to even look at it, let alone pick it up and use it. Instead, he ended up paying the cleaning lady a tip + pizza to unpack his things and put them in it’s place. I’m really thinking about moving out from here soon! Shaun really gets on my nerves!!

After work today I decided to go to the mall to buy a little something for Nusaybah. Her birthday will be coming up soon and I’d like to surprise her. There’s nothing women like more than a man who remembers to treat her for her birthday (and first time we met anniversary, first kiss anniversary, first time we held hands anniversary and finally, wedding anniversary. That’s excluding Valentines day, Mother’s day, Eid day, Women’s day… And basically every other day in the year!). I looked around but couldn’t find anything she’d need. After hours, I finally saw something I liked! It was a beautiful sparkling bracelet and anklet set with charms. A little pricey, one month’s salary gone, but hey, I don’t know when I’d ever get to spend this kinda money on her again coz from next month  I’ll be paying bills and buying furniture. So I bought it… Making sure 2 of the charms were an ‘S’ and an ‘N’. I’m sure she’s going to love it! Chicks dig these things – I think.

Just as I was about to leave, I got a call from Asghar, “Exse bra, I found out something. The owes have been chunning me and I reckon I know who’s behind the whole thing! You are really not going to like this. I’m so mad myself! Drop by the pozie later and we’ll discuss what to do next.”. I just couldn’t wait, I needed to know, I demanded to know! “Relax bra, I can’t talk right now. After graaf I’ll be home, we’ll talk.”, he replied, not budging at all. I couldn’t wait so I went over to Maami’s place. “Sayfullah! Great! You came… I take it Asghar spoke to you?”, Maami asked. “You know about it?!”, I exclaimed, shocked that Asghar would betray me this way. “Of course I know! I’m the one who orchestrated the whole thing!” “What?! You? Why?!”, I demanded to know. “Did you think I needed to be taught a lesson or what? Huh?”, I asked, trying not to raise my voice. “Well, you could say that…”, she replied with a smile. “No no no! Why? Do you have ANY idea what this has done to me?”, I asked, burrying my head in my hands. “What? At least see the girl first before deciding she’s a monster. I think she’s actually a nice girl, decent, comes from a good family…”, Maami said just before I interrupted. “What girl?”, I asked, now confused. “Well Naseerah of course! I’ve invited them over for supper and I want you to get to know her. What did you think I was talking about?”, she put her hands on her hips. “Oooooh, no Maami, that won’t be necessary.”, I rubbed the back of my head and smiled, ignoring her question. “Why? Is there someone else?”, Maami asked suspiciously. I really don’t know why Nusaybah wants to keep our relationship all hush hush but if that’s her wish… “No man, just, I’m not ready for all that now.”, I said, hoping she’d change her mind. “Not ready?? Two years ago you were busy telling everyone you want samoosas and now suddenly you not ready? I don’t buy it. Chal, go freshen up, they will be here soon.”, Maami was persistant.

When they knocked at the door, Maami straightened me up and dragged me to the door with her. “Assalaamu Alaikum Shazia! How are you darling? “, Maami said, inviting them all in. At first I thought Naseerah was a snotty, only-child, spoilt girl, whose daddy needed two body guards for. After Maami introduced them all to me, I realised they were her brothers and that she was just shy, not snotty. Maami kept the convo going while we waited for Mamoo and Asghar to arrive. Naseerah chatted to Maimoonah since they are best buds and that left me trying to break the ice with the two crazy looking guys. I could tell that they wern’t really all macho and that all this was an act. After all, I did this same thing with Apa’s hubby and he bought it, even though I was clearly younger than her. I guess it’s just a brother’s way of saying, “Don’t mess with my sister or I’ll break you in places you never knew could break!”, not forgetting the smileys at the end!

When Asghar came home, I felt a weight being lifted of my shoulders. I threw him a desperate look across the table, he could tell I was uncomfortable. He took over and handled the boys, but that wasn’t the end for me. Aunty Shazia started questioning me on what I do, my hobbies and likes and dislikes. If Naseerah’s dad were here, I doubt he’d be asking me all this. Infact, I doubt they’d even be here! Before they arrived Maami said, “Her father is a well known business man in the whole of Durban, so if you mess with his daughter…”. She left it to my imagination to figure out the rest of the sentence. That’s when I figured that I’d have to win Naseerah’s trust first by being kind and “interested” in her, before I break my news to her about Nusaybah, so that:
1. She doesn’t tell anyone else about Nusaybah or Nusaybah will kill me. And…
2. She doesn’t send her father’s goons to come kill me coz I played on her feelings.

When we were about to have dessert, everyone (besides Naseerah) dissappeared! It was if they purposely left the two of us there alone to mingle. “Uhm… So?”, I said, stupidly. “So?”, She looked down and blushed. Maami was right, she was pretty and very reserved. I doubt she’s had any boyfriends before. She came across as so neat and pious. She wore a scarf and avoided looking straight at me. I kinda felt guilty for having to do this to her. “Now that you know everything about me, tell me about you. What do you do?”, I started the conversation. “I work in real estate.”, She replied softly. “Tell me about yourself.”, I leaned forward a little in order to hear her properly. “Well, there’s not much to tell. I haven’t done anything exciting in my life. As you can see, I have two brothers who act like goons around me, so I’ve never really had any friends. Now that I’m working, I kinda have a little freedom… Although… They pop in whenever they get a chance. It’s so embarassing.”, she rolled her eyes, I laughed. “I’m sorry, I don’t even know why I’m telling you all this.”, she burried her head in her hands. “No, it’s cool. You can trust me. We’re friends right?”, I said, pulling her hand across the table. She smiled and gave me a nod. Just then my phone buzzed, “Hold on a sec.”, I said, leaving her hand and reaching for my phone. It was Nusaybah. Boy was I glad to hear from her! There was sooo much I wanted to tell her, but from the way she typed, I could tell something was wrong. I know her so well. I let her know that I was ok and didn’t say anything about Naseerah. She didn’t need more stress right now. She was using her cousin’s phone and I only had time to send through ONE message only, so I made it a good one. I put my phone away and carried on talking to Naseerah. The sooner I win her trust over, the sooner I can defuse the Naseerah bomb and the sooner I can let go of this guilt and carry on with my life with Nusaybah. Before everyone came back, Naseerah asked for my BBM pin. I gave it to her, it would be easier for me to break the news to her over chat. I hate to see girls cry. Umi didn’t raise me that way.

I waited for the moment they’d all just leave so that I could get down to what I actually came here for- finding out who was behind what happened that night. When Aunty Shazia finally said her salaams, Asghar and I walked them out. Naseerah quietly held my hand when nobody was looking. It was so weird, I really didn’t expect it. She turned red when I held the car door open for her. “Nice move.”, Asghar said, smirking like an idiot. “What bra? I held it open for her mother, she just got in too.”, I said, rolling my eyes. “No, I was talking about you holding her hand.”, Asghar smirked and raised his eyebrows suggestively again. “Exse, she was the one who made the move but my heart was the one racing! If her brothers saw and pulled a gun on me, I wuda peed my pants bra.”, I shook my head, Asghar laughed.

“Now on a serious note. Bra, I asked around. I found out the names of the guys you were pulling with that night. None of them seem to have any reason to hurt you, except Stanley. He, at the time, was working for someone that might have a grudge against you. But I can’t believe it. If we take this further, you could destroy a lot of lives.”, Asghar warned. “Who?! Who is it?!”, I shook Asghar by the shoulders, demanding to know. I couldn’t wait any longer! “Stanley worked for…”, My eyes widened as the name left Asghar’s lips.

The Prophet (SAW) said, “Whenever a man is alone with a woman the Devil makes a third. ” [Hadith – Ahmad and Al-Tirmidhi 3118, Narrated Umar ibn al- Khattab]

It was narrated that Ma’qil ibn Yassaar said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than that he should touch a woman who is not permissible for him.” [Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer , 486. Shaykh al- Albaani said in Saheeh al- Jaami’, 5045, that this hadeeth is saheeh.]

Ibn ‘Umar reports from the Prophet that once a lady came to the Prophet and asked him about the rights of a husband on his wife. He replied: … she should not leave his house without his permission. (Sunan Bayhaqi, No: 14490)

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) ordered his companions to limit their formal celebrations to the two Eids, Jumu’ah and the occasion of Nikah . Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prohibited them from celebrating the other festivals that they used to celebrate and commemorate before Islam, “When I came to you, you had two days which you used to celebrate in Jahiliyyah. Allah has replaced them for you with better days, the days of slaughter (Adhaa) and the day of
fitr.” And while the two Eids have been given to celebrate, Islam discourages extravagance and waste and spending beyond one’s means. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has also warned in several Ahadith about following the customs and ways of people of the Scripture. Ibn Umar (radiallahu anhu) is narrated to have said that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is also reported to have said, “You will imitate the nations before you very closely hand span by hand span, cubit by cubit, to the extent that if they went into a lizard’s hole, you would enter it as well.” The companions (radiallahu anhum) inquired, “(Do you mean) the Jews and Christians, O Messenger of Allah?” He (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, “Who else?” [Bukhaari & Muslim]
Entering a lizard’s hole is said to means the extreme imitation of these people in sin and disobedience.
